Chrysler confirmed it!

Chrysler is set to release a new drag-racing package for its Dodge Challenger muscle car this July, which will be aimed at both professional teams and enthusiasts. The new kit is described as a modern day equivalent of the Hemi Dart and Barracuda package cars of the late 1960s and will be loosely based on the Dodge Challenger Super Stock concept rolled out at last year’s SEMA Auto Show.

The information comes from Chrysler spokeswoman Patricia Georgevich, who revealed to Edmunds that the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is already working closely with Chrysler engineers to sanction the components for racing use.

Some of the specs flying around internet discussion groups include a new lighter chassis, weighing up to 800 pounds less than the production car, unique serial build numbers, several different variants of the current 5.9L HEMI and Magnum engines, and both automatic and manual transmissions.

Racing elements include a lightweight front fascia support system, composite lift-off hood with a functional scoop, an uprated cooling module with electric fan, new brakes and a set of racing seats.

Final pricing details and specification are expected to be released closer to its launch in July.

It doesn't say anything of that sort, I don't see why it wouldn't be, none of the modifications would make it any different than a mildly modified street vehicle. Only problem I can see is that the lightweight bumper may not pass the 5mph bumper test.

They're probably ditching the airbags too. I'm guessing enough safety equipment is getting pulled to save weight that it won't be street legal. But man, it would totally kickass if they were legal. A 3300lb Challenger with the 6.4 would be pretty sick.

less weight means, less materials, taking out comfort features most likely too. damn it better be cheaper!

I am still in love with the drag packaged one, though I know most of us wont ever be able to afford that car. Mother Mopar always teases us. Oh well cant wait for the day to see a new challenger staged next to me at track. :drive:

I don't understand how manufacturers can make these awesome vehicles to be in remembrance of the great era of muscle cars when they put power/heated everything in them. If you want to save weight, give me seats that are cloth, no heat, and move with a slider. I don't need defrosting mirrors, or any of the luxury crap if I'm getting a sports car. Luxury and sports car only go together when you are talking ferrari. I'm sure some people won't like what I've said but I just want a simple car that looks kick ass like the new challenger, and a big ass motor with as little weight as possible.
