hi guys
the sound system in my truck was raped when i got it the only stock equipment left is the tweeters and the amp(witch has been bypassed very poorly) speakers are alpine and the HU is a pioneer, i would like to try to get the amp working

i suspect the amp wont turn on because the PCI BUS wire is not conected to anything, is this wire just a switched positive?

I have yet to confirm it, but I have been told that the factory amp only throws out about 13 watts or something ridiculously low like that. It's been suggested to me that if you're using an aftermarket HU and speakers, then bypassing the factory amp will work better.

I'm in the process of looking into this now on my Durango.

What year is your truck? I ran an Alpine head unit and aftermarket speakers through the factory amp and never had a problem, and it sounded good IMO.

gotta remember the impedance of the stock stuff vs aftermarket.

most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms. stock infinity stuff is 2 ohm.

if the stock infinity amp is putting out say, 25 watts RMS at 2 ohms to the stock infinity components, then if you hook that amp up to a 4 ohm speaker set, that 25 watts will drop to 12.5 watts RMS.

which...is about the same as most aftermarket head units.

remember, the box on the outside might say "200 watt stereo head unit!"

but it's not putting out 200 watts. it's putting out 50 watts per channel, times 4 channels...PEAK power. that's NOT the RMS

that 50 watts peak per channel is more like 13-15 watts RMS per channel

so...aftermarket head unit, to stock amp, to aftermarket speakers...is really no better than just bypassing the stock amp.

I need to do this, I have an afterk market head unit and speakers and it sounds really lack luster.

I dunno if I wan to bypass the amp with a jump harness in the kick panel, or re-run new speaker wire.

I just went to the junk yard and cut the factory amp harness out of an 03 Durango with the Infinity system. Looking at my electrical drawings for this and comparing everything, the 03 Durango/Dakota is the same as the 01 Durango wiring, so it should be fairly easy to sort this out. That drawing posted in the original message is for an 03 Dakota, by the way.

The problem is that the harness I picked up only has the male side of the connectors and I forgot about the other side, which is soldered into the amp itself.

I ran across a post here which points me to these kits, which will probably solve the problem. Looks like some soldering and shrink tubing will need to be done but that's no big deal. Just need to figure out which one to use.

Looks like this is the kit: http://www.metraonline.com/part/70-6505

The main description says "Cherokee 97-01" but if you look at the instructions it also says "1997-2004 Dakota".

That says the wires are 204 inches long, I'm not sure how that is intended to be used. Does it connect in place of the amp, and you run the wires to the doors? Do you splice the wires from your HU into it, and it plugs into the connector that comes from the amp to go to the doors?

A dak-dur member used to make a jump harness that simply went in place of the amp, and the rest of the wiring stayed stock.

Says "Harness is plugged in at the factory amplifier and ran to the location of the aftermarket radio or amplifier "

That's more complicated than it needs to be..... hmmm

Yeah, I saw that too. Looks like that "kit" is just supposed to plug into the factory harness that comes from the HU to the amp, with a 204" pigtail to bypass the rest of the factory wiring. I agree, it's more complicated than it needs to be and should just be a short jumper from one end to the other.

I'm searching - so far unsuccessfully - for a supplier of these connectors. If I can source them I can easily make the jumper. They are only marked "AMP", and with the number of connectors manufactured by AMP, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack on the few websites I've looked.

Here are the connectors off the harness:
C1 - Output from amplifier to speakers (including amp power)

C2- Input from the HU to the amplifier.

Quick question for you guys. I forgot how it goes, do you want your subs to be 4 ohm and your speakers to be 2 ohm, or is it the other way around?

A thread about how to bypass stock amp by using 2 subaru harness'. http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127337

Search on Dak-Dur for things like inifinit, amp, bypass, harness etc. Somebody already figured this out and posted the part numbers.
