Steering wheel controls

Is a cd player out of an 01 and up without steering wheel controls the same as one with and will the steering wheel controls work even though the truck it came out of doesn't have steering wheel controls

The Stereo has to have the Hand Control or the Adapter? Just tried to hook up and now none of my dash lights work.
