View Full Version : Thinking about starting a Dakota magazine

The idea originated here, in the national meet thread. So i started looking into it.
On one site that i have looked at so far. For printing 1000 magazines at 52 pages each in full cover would cost between 5500-6000 + shipping costs. Of course, less pages means lower a price

Now if we can get 1000 subscribers at lets say 5600/month it will cost $5.60 a magazine. If we could get some parts companies to advertise for a fee they could eat part of the cost in each issue and lower our costs overall.

Only problem is, for a yearly subscription at 5600/month, it will cost people about $70 a year unless someone or myself can find a place that will give a discount for a yearly printing job.

Would anyone be interested or have any ideas or comments about the idea?

It would have

Feature trucks
How To's
Parts of course
Events

and whatever else people can come up with

That idea worked for mustangs. But I just don't see enough Dakota enthusiast to make that happen.

Perhaps a truck mag featuring all brands in different chapters to help offset the costs?

Feature real world builds and budgets with no holds barred reviews of products.

it's a possibility. i'd include ALL Dodge trucks (gas and diesel) and make it drag racing based. but also include cosmetics and handling.

if enough sponsors jumped onboard it could cut that cost in half. i don't have the knowledge to do any of this though.

it's an ambitious idea to be sure...

personally, I doubt I would be much interested, only because I already have subscriptions and have trouble enough reading through all of them in a month... further, they are major magazines, and so I pay about $25/yr for 12 issues that range for 160-220 pages per month... I can't see paying even double for 1/3 as much, even if it is Dakota based...

this will sound discouraging, maybe it is... I did subscribe to a new start up magazine, Dodge Truck World, some people may be familiar... what a debacle...

quickly went from monthly to quarterly though the price never changed... way way too much advertising space... stories were very light, not much substance... quickly canceled my subscription... magazine was eventualy rolled in with Chevs and Fords and imports, then eventually all went digital

take some work to get a mag going... gotta have regular contributors, both articles and photos, enough to fill even say 30 of those 56 pages, which usually means 6-8 articles/features, plus editorials or regular columns (what's new etc)... big commitment, will definitely take more than 1 or 2 people...

If someone would like to step up and start doing the R/T Rumble again, they are more than welcome. We turned it into an online read a few years ago, but no one kept up the job. It wasn't much, but it was something. Getting it back to print form isn't anywhere near as $$$ as the magazine being discussed. But alas, we're so low on memberships, I doubt we could afford to do it.

Thats the thing, I would be willing to do the research and put it together, however, i would like to try and get it to stay dakotas, and possibly durangos. In order to get a 1000+ member customer base, i would have to rely on more then just this dakota forum, i would rely on the other forums Im on so doing it drag racing based wouldnt work. What i could do and what was suggested on another site is make the mag half 4x4 and have street trucks. I could do how to's, big or small, have members send me pics of local mopar events and what not

Basically it would be a magazine for dodge members by dodge members, i dont have the $$$ to do it all on my own and go to shows and take tons of pics and interview people not to mention the time spent doing so

I could start a internet based magazine, i have seen it done, forums im on have done it and they turn out pretty kick ass. 70/year would be the price if we had no advertisers. Could possibly(TINY possibility) try and get dodge to jump on and do some advertising or some articles along with dodge/mopar updates. There is a lot we could fill the mag with, somone just needs to put it together

Instead of that, why not go to work for the DRTC and produce us a first class "Rumble"?

Been a member of dakotaUSA.com since 2004 way before i had my first dak, joined Dak-dur 3months after that. Those sites are my home and have been and always will be. I just joined here within the last month. I dont have an R/T i have a Laramie 4x4. Im not saying i wont do it, its just that me and my truck dont exactly fit in to what this site is based on. And then there is my dedication which will always stay with the sites that taught me what i know about dakotas. Not that i wont show dedication here, but you guys get what i mean

If someone where to hook me up with this "rumble" you speak of, or show me previous versions of it, i would be willing to do what i can to bring it back or help bring it back. And i will keep it dedicated to this site, however i will still push to do a dakota mag or an online dakota mag for the other forums

And for me to bring back the "rumble" would take a lot of participation from members here since i havnt been here very long

When was the last issue of the rumble posted or made? and does anyone have access to any of the other rumbles that might have been made

I looked over the ones from 05 on the site provided and i could def throw something like that together but because of work and the gf and what not, it might not be a monthly thing especially if im by myself, I could try and do monthly, or i could do every 2 months. But ill take and revise one of the 05 copies and make it look more updated, and give it more bang, and ill post what i come up with

Before those few online issues, the Rumble was in print. It was issued quarterly.

IMO...If we restart this, it should be "members only" read. All Dakotas and Durangos can be DRTC Members now, so that shouldn't be an issue.

So quarterly would be every 3 months correct?
If thats the case then it should be easy to do, but its up to you guys and if anyone helps i could push to get a couple more out a year unless you want to keep it quarterly.

IMO...Quarterly works best. I don't think we could come up with enough material for more. I would personally like to see it back in print form. We have substantially less members now than before when we were still printing it, so maybe cost won't be so bad to do so. I don't know anyone in the printing business though.

That's true as well. I know that we don't have more than 150 members as of now, and that's a stretch. Online read is cool though, until we can afford to do another print issue. We will help anyway possible if you choose to do this for us. I will bring this up at the next meeting and get everyone on board, possibly invite you to the meeting to get some more of your opinions. Thanks!

I need to sit down and knock something out....but waiting on Dave for an Exec Blurb and a something else....will have to go back and find the e-mail. Pic submissions and maybe some How-To write-ups with pics would be nice too...otherwise y'all are gonna get a whole lotta pics of MY truck....HA! Maybe I can do a step-by-step on how to clean a filthy engine bay..... :jester:

We have, but it has never been done. That's our downfall. I'll bring that up at the next exec meeting as well. That'd be a good task for the new secretary.

We will definitely look into doing this. I'll bring this up at the next meeting as well. We are busy trying to get people to sign up for the National Meet at this time though, so I don't know how quick we'll get to it.

You shouldn't have a problem getting help. I was going to bring all this up at the next DRTC meeting. They are on Sunday nights at 8pm CST, I'll see about getting you in to discuss it if you're free.
