View Full Version : SCT timing curves N/A?

Howdy again. I finally got my SCT PRP working, and I've been playing with it a little N/A while I finish piecing my Turbo kit together. So far I've only moved my shift point up to compliment the built trans.
What I was wondering is if anyone knows how much timing I can add for 93 oct? I added a few degrees so far but I don't want to go too far without being able to read Knock values.
Thanks, Justin

You should look into buying a knock sensor.. J&S safeguard is supposed to be a good one

Good idea, I never thought about buying an aftermarket knock sensor. I'll look into it.

Dyno tuning will help you with that too. You'll make more power up to a certain point, then no more power, and then eventually it will knock. The MS2/Extra manual has some input on spark tuning that should help: http://www.msextra.com/ms2extra/MS2-Extra_Tuning_Manual.html#sparkmap

Putting in on the dyno is definitely the way to go, like Sean said. More timing isn't always better. Ryan ran the timing up to 40* on my setup (with zero detonation, on 92 octane :rockwoot:), but it made it's best power at 33*. I'd put it on a dyno, and run the timing up until you see the power drop off (or until it detonates, if that happens first), then back it down a degree or two.

A dyno is my ultimate goal. However ,I'm not gonna do that until its boosted, just wanted to play with my new toy some while the truck is still running. Since its gonna get torn completely apart for body work then some turbo goodness very soon.

When I was N/A I ran as much as 40* total timing on my 318. That is with 91 octane, aluminum heads, really thick headgaskets, and 212/218 114lsa cam. Only made 240rwhp on that tune. later I pulled back down to 36* which felt a lot stronger ... didn't ever dyno that tune though....

I was told not to run over 32* on our motors.
