I know some people that don't have a BOV on a Supercharged truck. Is it really needed?

You may not need a BOV but you should have a recirculated bypass for anything over 6-7psi. It prevents damage to you throttle blades and blower impeller.

Think of a BOV as a fuse. It's only needed when shit goes bad,but it limits the amount of damage.

Its not a fuse, its a control valve.
A pop of valve would be a fuse. Those pop off at a certain amount of pressure, in case there is a over boost situation in a turbo car when a wastegate sticks.
Most of the BOV designs use pressure from the manifold to actually help close the valve itself to eliminate leaking under boost.
