View Full Version : Idle Video

I decided to shoot a video with the cutouts open. They're lots of fun on the street, but just like the McCord I owned almost 10 years ago, they rattle a bit when closed and it's irritating. I'm tempted to replace this PPH/Cutouts/Dual quiet muffler setup with Spintech 1 7/8's and Dual 3's.

They are electric. Not sure which brand yet, at some point will get it up on my ramps to get a closer look to see if there's anything I can do to reduce the rattling when they're closed.

Electric cutouts are a ton of fun, but they're annoying as hell when they leak.

Thanks, I bet they are annoying. Thats why I'm gonna get quality ones.

I heard other videos of it idling, what kind of mufflers does it have?

I don't know the muffler type yet - will check that out when I get it up in the air. All I know is that they're duals, and the pipes run to the back. They're relatively quiet (especially compared to having the cutouts open), I'm guessing Magnaflow or something similar. They're certainly quieter than the Spintechs and Hooker mufflers I've used on other trucks.

Debating on getting cutouts for my setup as well. Though it will be the boring old school 3 wingnut manual setup. Would only open them when I go to the track.

Two years ago on the way home from the track, the truck suddenly started stumbling hard. I was in escrow for my house, so I didn't want to tear it apart right away - limped it over to the new house and parked it in the new garage. The house I bought was a repo, so it required a lot of attention and resources. After almost a year of gathering dust in the garage, I got tired of wasting money with the bank & insurance - figured that money would be better spent on my kids & fixing up the house, so I stripped it down and sold the truck as a roller to a guy on my site (clint282cc).

Back in November I traded my Ram for a 2011 Civic to save money on insurance/gas after my child support got doubled, but quickly missed having a truck. I started shopping for Dakotas again, figured I'd pick up an older/cheaper one - was contemplating pulling the trigger on either ScatDak's truck or the 99 R/T that's for sale here in Nevada, when the guy who had this one for sale drastically dropped the price. I was going to be in his neck of the woods within a week anyways to visit family, so I pounced on it.

Any R/T's

I wish I had more time to socialize during my trip, but my mom moved down to Dallas to be closer to my sister and her newborn twins, I was there for just a couple of days to help her unpack and setup the bigger/heavier items (plus see my niece/nephew for the first time). I was hoping to make it out to the shindig at Bob's garage that weekend, but just wasn't able to make it work with my limited schedule/transporation.

I will most likely be out there again this summer with my kids, should have more time to hang out.

I have a few freinds that have experience with cutouts and have a cutout on my Evo X. QTPs rattle, leak, and need adjustments every so often to keep the leaks small. My QTP stopped working randomly about a month ago. The motor is still good, so I think its a wiring issue. DMH are supossed to be really good and my friend has a set on his 650 WHP cobra and loves them. He is getting rid of the regular ones to get their low profile design.
OP your truck sounds awesome!

I had dual DMH's on my last exhaust set-up, they wouldnt close one day so i crawled underneath and one motor had sheered itself completely off of the flange. Also- you'll get into the habit of constantly bumping the "close" button, because they will, without fail, loosen up just enough to leak a little and be annoying. Doing so will cause the butterfly to bend slightly and leak even more.

They leak initially because there is no limit switch on the motor. Unless you can perfectly program your finger to operate the switch, you're going to be over torquing it EVERY time you close them (or open them for that matter).

I bought DMH's because at the time, they were considered among one of the best, if not the best on the market.

Total waste of a few hundred dollars, IMO. Yeah, the functionality is cool for a bit, not burning your hands taking off the caps is nice- but for the money i spent on these things I would expect they had some built in safeguards to protect against normal operation. By the time I installed them and the few months it took for them to fail, I was out of warranty and shit out of luck.

I have one in pieces and one complete- 2.5". If anyone wants them- shit I'd probably give them away.

add to that: at least on my N/A setup, which was pretty stout by most standards.... I netted the exact same ET with true duals vs. open cutouts on a single exhaust. To me, cutouts just aren't worth it.... money is better spent on a good free flowing system.

I like the cutouts for running the stock catback exhaust and then using the cutouts to be loud/race. I dont see the purpose of doing an aftermarket exhaust and cutouts.
