Well looks as if i may be building a new motor. I am almost sure that the rings on 2 of my cylinders are torched. I will know tomorrow when i pull the motor. If i have to rebuild I think i am going to go with a budget 408 build up. It still has to be a daily driver so i have to stay somewhat conservative. But my plans are cast crank, forged pistons, I beam rods w/arp bolts, with a full internal balance, as for heads i'm thinking of going with eddys with a compression ratio set around 10-10.5to 1. I have to do this on a budget (money is kind of tight right now). As for the assembly I can do everything myself (my dad and I) so i can hopefully save a few bucks there. I'm looking to spends no more than 5k. As for induction i have that covered and exhaust is going to have to work for now I will upgrade on down the road. But i'm looking for something in the neighborhood of around 320-350rwhp.

Damn, sorry to hear that. Keep us posted on the new build, you'll be saving a good bit on labor doing it yourselves.

How did you come to the decision that it's a piston (or 2)?
With the ticking noises you have and the relatively sound motor otherwise, be damn sure it's not in the head before you go and pull the motor.

Here is you a budget 408 block.

I think he builds them. from time to time. Cause I see them on there.

well this morning i finished pulling the motor and pulled a piston and found that the top ring was cracked in about 4 pieces along with a couple of stress cracks on the piston between the first and second ring grooves. The good thing is that the block looks good. I am going to finish taking down the motor this afternoon and hopefully get all the necessary peices together to start a 408 build. I am planning on dropping the block of at the machine shop this week so hopefully i will be able to complete this project in about a month or so.

I think it would be a mistake to run a cast crank when a forged one is $300 more...tops.
This store seems to sell alot of 408kits to ram guys.

Well guys here is my current list lemme know what adjustments I need to make.
eagle 4.00cast crank with thier I beam bronze bushed rods. Thinking of going with wiseco forged true-pro pistons with a set of moly rings. (would I have to internal balance this kit or will it be fine with the stock dampner and flexplate)
Heads-possibly a set of eldebrocks but still not sure. I could get a set of eq magnums with some port work for the price of eldebrocks (please lemme know what you would do).
As for cams thinking of going something along the lines of a 210x so it will be street friendly and pull plenty of vaccum.

If its internally ballanced then you will need a 5.2 flexplate and a ballanced dampener. Not sure about the torque converter, I know my viper had weights but Im not sure it they were there to ballance it or what.

I know you're trying to save money, but I'd go with a forged crank and forged h-beams, shouldn't cost too much more than a cast crank and i-beams.

I would go with the eddy's. That way you could pull them off later and have some nice port work done. If you can afford it go with the forged stuff like dave said.

The heads and cam will make the hp... but will also cost about 45% of his total budget. Figure between the heads, minimum required machine work and cam...thats $1800 or so.

well i called a few people today and they said go with some eldebrock heads and the cast crank and the forged I beams that are internal balanced will be plenty for my application. As for machining the block I am going to check out a place tomorrow. A buddy of mine used to work there and i can get some killer prices on that so looks like i might luck out a little on that part.
