I made one last swing through the set-up and fired her up. time to get her off her perch and back on the road!

If you've been following it in the other thread, you'll see a few repeats, but her she is, all done!:

ran just fine on the jackstands, lol. i have to put it away for a few days. homework and shitty weather. hopefully next weekend i'll take her out & mayyyyybe i'll borrow a video camera for some high speed cul-de-sac runs.

Did you ever take any pics of the inside of the heat exchanger part?

Pete102580

no pics of the insides of anything. i could drain it before i put the bumper back on.... you just want a pic down inside the radiator cap, or?

sure man. doing another would be cake. if you wanted an exact-ish copy (there is one or two things i would do different) i could supply you with what and where to buy everything.. then just have it ready. off the top of my head:
intercooler = $150
exchanger = $200
tank= $150
pump = $120
misc clamps, silicone, hose, fittings = $200-$250
add 20-30% for really misc stuff... and shipping.

I guess I mis-spoke. I meant the deal you made of cardboard that ended up aluminum. I guess that's the intercooler itself?

i was considering using that style i made of cardboard (measurements came from the web), before i discovered i could rotate the blower discharge to make more room. im glad someone told me you could rotate it, lol... or this would have turned out much different!

So did you have that part built, or buy it and modify it?

the intercooler is an off the shelf unit from www.frozenboost.com. i did have to have the blow off flange welded to the end tank, as there wasn't any room to spare to incorporate a part like this, which would have been much easier:

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/images/product/bov_tpipe_greddy_picture.jpg

there is probably less than 1/2" slop in how it all fits together. i had to cut back the paxton inlet as much as physically possible to still get a clamp on it because i had to move the intercooler up & over to accommodate the 3.5" 180* intake stuff that goes between the intercooler inlet and the fender. it can't be any other way, as i can barely put a finger between the intake elbow and fender.

here was the initial mismatch. if i cut into the intercooler outlet a little, i would gain some more room between the intake tube and fender. we'll see if i need it.

i ended up cutting a whole lot more than this away... its now flat and only enough room for a tbolt to bite:

Here's a direct link to the cooler:

if i were a serious racer, i would have dumped the $700ish into a custom one which would undoubtedly be more efficient and lighter (the one i got has cast tanks and is about 15lbs)... but, i'm not so i figure i could pocket that difference.

Just curious, but what would you do different? The only thing I see is the bov position, I would have put it before the I/C's heat exchanger, so that any air that goes out of it can't add heat to the I/C's cooling system. Either way, it looks great, I wish I had the cash to build my truck like yours.

Pete102580

im not sure i understand the significance in where the BOV is (my eye's are squinty and my head is cocked like a dog thinking about it, lol)

one thing i should have thought out more is how the water lines are run under the truck. i kinda pieced it together without a plan. It's fine how it is, but water comes from the drivers side of the tank, down the drivers side tie-down, into the pump, then across the truck to the passenger side, and to the engine inside the passenger frame rail.

the return comes back through the drivers side rail, crosses to the passenger side and up through the passenger tie-down.

to fix all that i should have had the guy that built my tank put the supply line on the passenger side, and the return on the drivers. to fix it now, either the lines cross under the truck, or in the bed. i have them crossing under the bed.

it is a significant expense, but... ive had this thing for 10 years, and bought the blower Easter of 2009. About 18 months of deal shopping and penny pinching, the blower/intercooler is done. i don't do ccards. but... i greatly appreciate the compliment!

If you had the bov before the intercooler, then any air that blows off wouldn't add any heat to the i/c system. With the bov after the i/c, you are cooling the air before blowing it out. It wont matter at the track when you are making WOT passes, but when you are cruising on the street it would help keep the system cooler. Either way, it wont make a big difference, and I still love your truck :biggthumpup:

ahh, that makes sense... using energy to cool air that's being discarded anyway.. gotcha & thanks again.

yea, you can see it through the lower valance. it takes up the whole window so it really just looks like a shiny radiator.. the black 'speed-grille' hides is pretty well.
