In all honesty and trying to be of real help it really comes down to YOU!!

What are your Mechnaical Abilities.
How Extreme do you want to get with it later on.
How well do you understand each system.
How much effort do you plan on spending on it.
What is your budget.

The most honest and unbiased answer I can give you is pick the one that suites YOU and learn all you can about how to make it work for what ever you plan to do with it!!

Now for some proven points from Professional Racing:

Turbos alway take a Disadvatage hit due to the fact they do have the potential to make more power than any other system out there.
There are some classes that won't even allow Turbos just for this reason.

There are some that still run Centrifugal Superchargers Competitively against Turbo Cars. Donny Marsh of Pro 5.0 and D&D Perfomance fame comes to mind.

Here's a perfect example of "Know what your working with and know how to make it work for you." BILLY GLIDDEN used to run a Nitrous Small Block Mustang against Turbo mountain motors (600cui+) and was very competitive. He knew he was on the ragged edge of the equipment he was using, BUT he knew how to make it work and keep it together.

Famous words of Nitrous GodFather Pat Musi: If I had it all to do over again I would go with Turbos, But I know how to work with nitrous and I'm too old to learn something new from the beginning and we are still competetive. Even though we go through 3-5 engines per season to the Turbo guys 1-2 engines.

There is such a thing as making too much power. Or some like to say Not enough traction!!

If you had asked me 1-2 yrs ago. I would have said go Supercharger as the Price and Availability and simplicity just out weighed Turbo by a Long shot.

But as of recently there are 2 shops that have closed that gap for Turbo systems for Dakotas. And the Supercharger kits (NEW) are scarce only 1 supplier still doing it.

If your thinking of buying used? Set aside about $800-1200 to have the compressor (turbo or SC) rebuilt. You never know how the last person treated it. And another $500 for missing and broken parts.

You will hear a few myths and 2 I really cringe when I hear is?

1. Turbo Lag: Turbo lag can be gotten rid of, or can also be useful depending on what your goal is. Anyone that Complains of TurboLag doesn't know what they are doing.

2. Supercahrgers are Linear in Boost: They don't make full boost down low and only bring the boost on as the egine RPMs come up. This is a True statement but also shows the person doesn't know how to work with the equipment.(that is if they are using it as an excuse against SCs) You can make as much boost as you need where you need it by matching the equipment to the purpose. Just like with Turbos.

Now that your probably thoroughly confused!!
I would suggest a Turbo system!!!

Only thing I would add are Turbo systems are going to cost a lot more to install in the long run compared to a bolt on supercharger kit.

That used to be true!!

But as of late there is 2-3 systems out there that are in the $5000-6000 range with everything included. (Tuning as well)

The supercharger systems are right at the same prices and lack the tuning option.

If I were gonna go boost, I would avoid a belt driven system. All people do is complain about how the belt slips, then eventually they sell it and invest in a turbo. At least, that seems to be the pattern with most supercharger users.

NEVER! Plus seeing how some of these supercharged trucks have run time wise I wouldn't look away either. Like others stated before boils down to knowledge/funds.

It all depends on how far you want to go. A supercharger works great up to about 10-12psi. After that belt slip becomes a serious issue.

Keeping the belt tight and keeping it from breaking have always been a problem from what I've seen. The higher the boost, the worse it gets. And it's rare to see a s/c user not up the boost over time.
That why if "I" were gonna go boost, I'd go straight for the throat and install a turbo.
No parasitic HP loss would just be a bonus.

After having both.... I vote turbo. But then again - I'm not capable of ever leaving well enough alone. My truck ran just fine with a supercharger on it. I just always wanted more and more.

It's a sickness....

I will never sell my supercharger, I only want to go 11.5, I don't need a race block, I never want to get a roll bar, Cal tracs are enough. Yep, I am a biiiiigggg liar. haha. I have to agree Duner, its a disease.

The good thing about getting that disease on this truck is the simple cure is a lighter car for the next project.

Well, sorta.

If I had this drivetrain in something lighter it would go quicker, but then I'd still be trying to make it do more.... I would just be spending more of the money on safety requirements.

Also having gone both Supercharger (Both Procharger and Paxton) and Turbo hands down its Turbo.

However its all in how fast you want to go as mentioned above once you exceed that 10-12 lbs boost a supercharger belt is going to break loose, add in the torque of our 408's just makes it worse again.

Problem is we barely utilize the turbo's capability on these factory blocks we are blowing off more power then we are using............. ahhhggg the spending never ends no matter what until you hang up the reigns ... and i'm done with this cash cow once i take my shot this fall.

I think OP should let a shop do everything, turbo, exhaust, fuel system and tuning. If not he'll be reading for a year, or destroy his shortblock in three months and take a year after that to fix it and three more months for somebody to do it right.
