View Full Version : How to spin the wp on an engine dyno?

Hey guys, almost ready to put my 425 on the dyno, but we're trying to figure out how to spin the waterpump without putting all of the accessories on the engine. Can't just run a belt from the crank pulley because the wp is reverse rotation. Thinking about using a Moroso electric drive, but it uses a v-belt, so we're not sure how that would work with the magnum serpentine setup. So I figured I'd post on the boards and see what other folks have done when they've dyno'd their Magnums. Thanks.

One of the guys on Devilbrad said that too LOL
I think I figured out how I could do it (using Dave's engine for my diagram):

But, I think I'm just gonna go with a CSR electric pump instead, free hp

Thanks. Hoping for 600+ on the engine dyno. I'd like to beat my blower times on the motor, and then see what she'll do on a 300 shot.

You mean a professional engine builder can't figure this out?! :nana:

LOL Well, we were just trying to figure out how to do it without me having to ship my accessories up to him :) Electric water pump fixed the problem. Well, almost, now it created another problem, but a minor one, just have to add an idler for the new belt routing.
Gotta remember too, Ryan does primarily full race engines and older stuff, this is the first Magnum setup he's done. But he's made the R3 work with our stock lifters and holddowns, and the stock crank sensor, so at least it'll be easier if someone else decides to go this route.

What electric water pump did you go with?

CSR, part # for our trucks is 903MAG. Works with the stock timing cover.

They're pricey, $340 direct from CSR. Summit lists them for $330, but then they tack on their $10 handling charge, so it's the same, altho Summit has them backordered for three weeks. If you call CSR they have them in stock.

dave are you going to keep the pump on after you drop the motor in or is it mainly just getting bolted up for the dyno pulls.

LOL I was trying to picture it in my head, and then decided it would be easier with a picture of an engine, then I remembered that your sig had a good shot of all the pulleys. Thanks!

I'll post up how it actually gets mounted, but it should go something like this (thanks again to Dave for the visual aid :)):

I will be watching this one I have wanted to do that mod long time so you better take good cliff notes on belt # and what idler will work and dont forget us A/C guys!:nana:

No problem. It'll be interesting to see a back to back dyno on a truck to see what the gains are. I've seen talk of anywhere from 10-20hp.

I would lean toward 20+hp when I used to drop the short belt a Cecil I would feel the power off the line and it showed at least 2 tenths improvement so you better get this right so we all can add it to the list of mods!:D

are you going to have enough " wrap " around the crank pulley? it looks like its going to slip like crazy

He has to measuring the turning drag on all his accesories worst case, then you can figure out the wrap angle needed. Or he could just try it and see.

That's just a guess at idler placement, gonna set it up for as much wrap as I can get, and hope it's enough :)

Dave have you talked to the dyno shop. I was looking at one of my pics and see no belt on the motor. Mybe they dyno shop has a forced water system.
as you can see there's no belts on my motor in the run. In fact no accesories, fuel injection or supercharger where on the motor. The engine stand was for breaking the motor in mostly. We broke it in with a 1000cfm holley carburetor on it

From that picture it looks like they had their own water setup, I don't think they dyno Ryan uses has that. But it's not a problem now, went with an electric waterpump :)
