I am curious as to what the SCT actually does. When it comes to computers I am lost. I know most of you are reading this thinking, "Great! Another dumb ass" but I only want to learn. I hear people talk about tunes and how they have to tweak the computer to run different cams and other hard parts. How do I know when and what I need to do to the computer? My engine is all stock other than a CAI and a ported and polished TB. I am not new to mechaics. I can do anything when it comes to turning wrenches but I know next to nothing when it comes to computers. I know it controls all aspects of fuel and ignition from readings that it sees from the sensors but that is pretty much all i know. Like I said, I am only wanting to learn. Please forgive my ignorance.
Buy it from Hemifever, and let him make the tweaks.

I am aware that I can purchase it from him. I would like to know what he is actually "tweaking". Call me strange but I like to know/understand what other people are doing to my vehicles lol. For example, I could take my truck to the dealer and have them install parts that will make it run better and make more power but I would want to know what is being done to my truck, if that makes sense. Just like I know that intakes and headers help move air/fuel, more smoothly through the engine thus making the engine more efficient. I came from the diesel world which is less complicated than gasoline engines.
You could buy the PRP package and tweak it yourself and will show you what he's doing. fuel tables, timing, .......

This is an excellent book. Not too much on SCT, but a great primer on tuning efi. Tells you what you need to tweak to get things right.
As far as learning the PRP software there is an instructional video that show how to tune a ford MAF based system with SCT PRP ... In terms of resources for tuning OUR trucks with SCT ... all you really have is a handful of people with basic level knowledge on these boards, and an even smaller group of tight-lipped vendors. You pretty much just have to experiment to learn how to tune our truck at this point...

So bascially what the SCT does is allow you to adjust the timing and fuel? Control how much fuel and spark is given at a specified time? Thanks for the link on the book. I'll see if borders has it. If not, I'll order it. Dont like waitin on good reading material.

Please forgive me, what is the PRP package? Is there any advantage to having an SCT for a stock motor?

Theres HUGE advantages of having SCT on a stock or modified truck.
Best $$ you can spend.

The SCT software can do so much more than just fuel/spark. You have pretty much complete control over everything the PCM monitors or controls. But that's just the basics that will really effect the tune.

I kinda wish our local PRP do it yourself tuning guys would have a sticky section. To give people a idea what to tune where on the PRP. Plus it would show maybe someone like myself that is willing to learn if I should attempt this. Or just buy the tuning package and have Hemifever tune my junk.

That is basically my thoughts on it. What does "PRP" stand for? Some people like to keep information to them selves and not share it but, personally I think it would be to their advantage to share the knowledge. For example; If I knew what exactly I was purchasing I would be more likely to spend the money. I dont want to buy something just because some one says that I should have it.

PRP means DIY = Big learning curve.
Just buy the SCT from Hemifever, send him your data logs, he'll email a tune accordingly, rinse repeat...Or go carbed and buy a screwdriver.
Not knocking Sean, he's the best out there and he's been great to deal with, but tuning these things with EFI is more than I care to learn right now...So I trust Sean (Hemifever)

I agree 100%. If the vendors "in the know" disseminated some of their knowledge, I am sure that the market would increase. DIYers are DIYers, and those that pay others to tune will stay that way.

Just cause it hasn't been answered yet, PRP stands for "Pro Racer Package", it is the software you need if you want to completely write your own tunes.

That is a great option I agree, but I want to use a programmer like a screwdriver back in the day. Why live in the dinosaur age? So why limit yourself to just that info? When you have a different application your working with?

Funny thing is if we had a Mustang or a Camaro I bet those sites have tons of info on how to self tune with SCT. Just seems like most of the Dakota world is happy with others doing their tunes. Again not knocking Hemifever at all, I just want a more hands on approach.

It is plain to see that there are others like me who want the satisfaction and knowledge of doing it them selves, and there are the others who are the "pay someone else to do it" kind.
Does Sean (hemifever) have a phone number? I would like to speak with him over the phone and discuss prices and options. I have come to the conclusion that I want to use the programmer as a screwdriver. I want the satisfaction of doing it my self. Hopefully someone will be willing to help me out.

If you guys want a support community any of the standalones have good ones- or you'll need to start one up. I think some sort of users group for the PRP with a secretary and publically posted notes would be a huge leap in the right direction.

If you are going DIY, sean may or may not be the best person to buy it from. I paid $250 for the PRP from Josh@aerospheric a while back... I would contact him and SCT directly in addition to sean. Between the three, you will probably find the best price..

I tried to get something like that going way back when on dak-dur. Basically, I started a diary of my first attempt at tuning. There wasn't much interest, so I gave it up ...

I agree, hopefully this topic doesn't up and die. I know you and others on this site tune with other types of setups. So the knowledge is out there and I am sure we have some lurking on our site that could help with SCT.
