Putting my Black Magic 180 fan on tonight, just wondering what the closest ign source is for power to the fan. I only want it to run with ign on. Worried about running down my import sized optima.

The battery, or you could tap into a hot wire underneath he fuse box, as long as a its a thick enough wire to carry the current of both loads.
Then put in a relay wired into a ignition-on source.

I really need to get comfortable with some electric wiring stuff but don't want to trial and error with this fan. Any further help for this electric noob? Thanks

do you have a test light????I get a paycheck today so I'll run to radio shack and get some new leads for my multimeter. So with my multimeter, what do I set it to, what reading am I looking for, and which wires should I start with? Thanks

You set your meter to read VDC, or DC Voltage. Should have a V with two lines, one solid one dashed in parallel. If you don't have an auto-ranging meter, set it to the 20V range. Find a chassis ground point to hook the negative lead to, either with an alligator clip or find a point that will securely hold the probe. Then, take your positive lead and start probing wires while turning the key on. The ignition source to the relay doesn't need to run that thick of a wire because it's a low-current path. I thin I'm tapped off of a blank fuse port in my dash, but I've got a manual switch for my fan.

I asked a friend with a test light to help and he found (on a '99 anyway) fuse port #16 in the dash is empty and gets power with ignition on. I tapped into it to power the supplied flex-a-lite control box and the fan works great so far. The test will be when I move to Houston and drive light to light in the summer heat. The flx-180 cover the width of the radiator core perfectly, like it was made for it. Only thing I'm concerned about is that the bottom third of the radiator has no shroud covering it, so no airflow sitting still in traffic.
Except for the exhaust note, the truck is noticeably quieter. I had to go up front and put my head down to the radiator to hear the fan over the exhaust.
My stock valvespring replacement, hs 1.7 install went well also. I thought these HS were noisy? I've heard noisy rr and these are quiet! I did lube the hell outta them though with assembly lube for the initial start up with the rockers. Every pivoting surface, and worked it into the crevices.

It was empty fuse on my 03. I used it for my fan ignition turn on.
