Is it hard to change? Just had a C-notch put in and he told me that that thing is leaking. What will it cause to go bad if I drive it before fixing it?

do you know why its leaking? How much of a drop do you have? Do you know your pinion angle?

Pete, I'll type it slowly for you R E A R P I N I O N S E A L not transmission tailshaft seal! LOL!

If you're careful it's pretty easy to change the Pinion Seal. The manual says "support the rear end, pull the driveshaft (index mark it for position), pull the brake drums so they aren't dragging and rotate the pinion by hand a couple of times, then using an inch pound dial or beam type torque wrench measure the torque required to rotate the pinion shaft. Record for later use. Remove the pinion nut. Remove the companion flange. You may have to use a puller. Pry out the old seal and install the new one. Install the companion flange, put RTV into the splines, install the pinion nut. Tighten to 210 ft lbs. Measure the torque required to rotate the pinion. Tighten the pinion nut in 5 ft lb increments until it takes 5 in lbs more torque to rotate the pinion than measured earlier to compensate for the extra drag of the new seal.

To be honest, when we changed the pinion seal in my brother's Dodge van we just re-torqued the pinion nut to 210 ft lbs and called it good, because it was about 10 below and we were 500 miles from home. The seal never leaked again and he drove the van for another 4-5 years.

Good luck finding something to create and measure 210 ft/lbs that'll fit under the truck while it's on jackstands. It's fun.

I have no clue, he was doing the C-notch and noticed the fluid spraying the tank and said I needed to change that seal. I have the Hotchkis drop so 2/3 I guess. I am not sure what pinion angle is sorry.

That's not to much of a drop. I think the angle you want is around 4* if its too far out, it will cause premature wear on both the tailshaft and pinion seals. If you dont have any driveline vibration then I wouldnt worry bout it

its only a pain if the axle is seperated from the truck and you try doing it with out a impact. hah

Check the O ring on your speed sensor.
