I've wondered how my TKO truck would look like with that treatment. If I wait long enough I'm gonna find out anyways. D'oh.

I have been also thinking of doing that to my R/T too. Just have the whole black, paint the taillights, wheels, no grill inserts, etc. I kinda have been thinking of doing the wheels in black chrome, so at least there is some sort of shinest to it.

That would be tempting except for the price tag associated with the swap... I'm already waist-deep with the blackout theme - the engine bay just got redone - aside from the optima redtop (will buy a billet cover soon and powder coat it black), billet fuel rails and the blue plug wire clips (leftovers from the 03 R/T, will soon be replaced with black clips) almost everything in the truck is black. Even the interior is darker - replaced the carpet with a darker shade and installed black Viper seats.

don't do it... in 5 years everyone will know exactly when you got it painted and realize it was a passing fad. i thought of redoing some of mine in flat black but since it's now the rage, i'll keep what i got.

I like how these guys try to make that a NEW Fad !!!!
I have seen several Mopars from the early 70's with that same paint job from the factory!!!!!
In particular I remember 1 197? Challenger 440 Magnum that used to always come to our car shows that was 100% unrestored, and in prestine condition.
It was flat black with black 70's rims and chrome hub caps.
So we can say Mopar did it first!!!!!!!

yes it's been around since the onset of hotrods in the 50s but right now it's a fad. what else would you call painting a 100k+ car flat black? as for the person saying it's how mopars came back in the day... umm right. yes various parts like hoods or stripes came flat black but it's not like the entire body was flat black. if anything notice what they were contrasting flat black with; eye popping colors like curious yellow, sassy grass green, panther pink. IMO it's just getting too played out now cus it's the cool thing to do all the sudden.

DO IT. I think my next paint job might be one of these jobbers, once its a toy and not a daily driver. I considered it for this paint job, but didnt want to deal with it looking dirty, then it would just look like crap.

Looks awful. I think it looks like someone didn't have enough money to finish it right.

There's a nice S10 here locally that is painted the same. It looked pretty good when new, but now it's about 9 months old and looks real crappy. Doesn't seem to weather very good at all.

If its weathering then they just sprayed black primer, or sprayed a base coat with no clear.
You can get a flat black paint job, and have it hold up the same as any other base/clear job.
Its as simple as applying your under coats, then applying your black base, and then adding flattening agent to the clear coat until the desired flatness is archived. You even wetsand and buff it after words.
You can also make any color flat, even metallics.

No the black base coat is OK, the clearcoat is what has gone bad. It's "milky" in places & clear in others.

If it is a base/clear, then it should not be weathered in 9 months, it will looks exactly the same as when It was finished.
I doubt its a base/clear finish. Its probally a black primer job.

Definitely not primer. It actually looks like there was a reaction between the base coat and the clear. It was done by a reputable body shop here locally, and they have agreed to redo the paint job.

Hmm, I see. It can be tricky to get the look right, the clear goes flat as it dries, and it can be hard to determine where the clear was sprayed. So tiger striping is likely to occur for someone doing it the first time (happened to me.) A number of factors could have caused the clear to cloud like that such as too much clear uildup, inadequate ventilation, no UV protection in the clear, etc...
I hope they get it figured out, when its done right, it will bring years upon years of a great looking finish.

I've been thinking about doing a cowl hood and having it painted flat black to accent my DA. I can't remember who said it but they were right about mopar using flat black as an accent on plum crazy purple, panther pink, and all sorts of colors. I think it would look great on my truck because I put on some R/T stripes down the back of the bed and did it in a flat black and it looks extremely nice.

One "theory" I have heard, is that they used satin black on the hoods, so that the sun would not reflect off of them into their eyes, when they were racing.:woot:
